The Rev. Ron Schlak, Pastor
With the projected snow storm we started to worry about Trinity's Table about Friday. Were we going to be able to get to church, if so were we going to be able to get home and would we have any people come to eat. Well as most of you know we had virtually no snow today. We were able to get to church and get the meal started. Then as they changed the forecast we worried would we have anyone to come and eat. Well, we were like the weather man, we all missed the forecast and we really should not have worried. We had no snow and we ended up serving 277 meals. We had a terrible time trying to get the meal cooked today. We planned on having baby Lima beans but after cooking them for almost fours hours they were still hard as rocks. We finally decided they were not going to cook up. So we hurried up and discarded the Lima's and put on a pot of pinto beans and said a little prayer that they would get done in time for supper. Well our prayers were answered. They were ready to eat by suppertime.
The menu for tonight
was as follows:
Pinto Beans - donated
Corn - donated by friends of Trinity
Greens
Ham bought from Mountaineer Food Bank Applesauce - donated by friends
of Trinity
Cup Cakes - made by Robin Synder, more on this later
Bread - donated by Charleston Bread
Cornbread
We were all really
shocked by how many meals we serve tonight. Fortunately we did
plan on serving 250 meals, so we had enough food to feed
everyone. The hams were frozen and in order to get them thawed in
time to cook we had to take them out of the freezer on Wednesday, long
before they started to predict this non event snow storm. We did
not have any other choice but to go ahead a cook the hams, they were
thawed. We were fortunate we did or we would have not have had
enough food. God was looking out for us again. The people just
kept coming in all night long and before we knew it we had served 277
meals. It is truly amazing. I guess being hungry out weighs
walking to the church in the drizzle. We had a large group of
volunteers tonight so that was another worry that was a waste of our
time.
We gave out the rest of the clothes that Cross of Grace brought last
week. We had a couple of guests tonight, Jim and Robin Synder
from St Paul's Lutheran Church and their niece who came to help
serve. A few weeks ago Robin took a large can of applesauce home
with her and promised to make something with it. She made 8
dozens cup cakes with this can of applesauce. They were really
yummy so we would like to thank her for taking the time to bake the cup
cakes. The people really enjoyed them. I must correct an
oversight in my newsletter last week. Two good friends, Richie
and Billie Bennington, donated three bags of fresh oranges last week
and I forgot to thank them. Thanks Richie and Billie. The
people loved the oranges. I hope Richie and Billie will forgive
me on my oversight. I am getting forgetful in my older
years. Overall we think we had a fantastic night, no snow,
plenty of good food and plenty of people to eat it. How much
better can it get than that. Thanks to all who help make this day so
wonderful. I almost forgot our cost tonight was 31 cents per meal.
Unfortunately this was Pastor Ron's last night with us. He will
be missed. His support of Trinity's Table has been unwavering, we
wish him well in his new position, and may he continue to walk with
God.
I would like to leave Pastor with these parting words,
May the road rise up
to meet you
May the wind be always at our back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your field
and until we meet again
May God Hold you in the palm of his hand
